This is a famous quotation attributed to Abraham Lincoln:

“If I had eight hours to chop down a tree, I’d spend six hours sharpening my ax”

The below  cartoon illustrates this concept:

 Now, your comments:

This cartoon shows a flaw in Honest Abe’s approach.

I would love to know your point of view…

I wish you a successful and Happy New Year!

If your ax is dull you’ll work a lot harder. Work smarter not harder. plan the best way to do it before you do it…

Keep a green tree in your heart and perhaps a singing bird will come.
    - Chinese proverb

If trees could scream, would we be so cavalier about cutting them down?
We might, if they screamed all the time, for no good reason.
    - Jack Handey

I think that I shall never see
A billboard lovely as a tree.
    Perhaps, unless the billboards fall,
I’ll never see a tree at all.

I agree the cartoon does illustrate a flaw in the literal interpretation of Abe’s quote. I do believe the intent of the quote is still valuable. We need to sharpen our axe before swinging and we need to take breaks to sharpen our axe during the process. Preparation and knowing when to rejuvenate are key factors in optimum production.

You are right, balance is required, when we miss the balance we get what the cartoon illustrates…
